Severe Conditions and Terminal Illness: Full Universal Credit Support Maintained
Anthony Lane
A new UK government bill reaffirms full Universal Credit support for individuals with severe and terminal illnesses. Introduced in June 2025, the legislation protects existing "Special Rules for End of Life" (SREL), ensuring fast, high-rate payments for the terminally ill. It also creates a new "Severe Conditions Criteria" (SCC) from April 2026, shielding over 200,000 people with lifelong conditions from stressful reassessments and guaranteeing them the highest level of financial support.
